9 Fun Facts About Water

Interesting and important facts about water, relating to life and our planet.
Water is literally the lifeblood of our planet – it is in our bodies, it regulates our weather and climate, and it sustains all living beings. While you probably already know this, there is much more to this precious resource that will make you appreciate it even more. From the vast oceans that span the continents to the invisible role that water plays in our health, these interesting facts about water will broaden your understanding of water's true role in our everyday lives.
- Approximately 71% of the Earth's surface is covered by water, and around 97.5% of it is in the form of saltwater in the oceans. This means that only about 3% of this water is fresh. However, 2.5% is frozen in the atmosphere or underground, making only 0.5% of all fresh water available for drinking. This is why water must be used wisely and not wasted.
- Water cannot be destroyed, but it exists in a limited quantity. The good news is that water is a renewable resource, but the way we manage the amount we have matters. Keeping our natural sources of fresh water clean and free of contamination ensures we have more usable water; otherwise we risk reducing our global supply of drinking water.
- Agriculture is the world's largest consumer of fresh water, accounting for around 70% of total fresh water withdrawals. Although we need water to grow the food we eat, researching water-efficient practices in agriculture can help sustain our fresh water reserves, especially as the world's population grows and agricultural production is expected to need to increase.
Some ideas include improving water delivery systems to make them more efficient, and using advanced technologies to determine the exact amount of water needed for ideal soil moisture.
- More than 2 billion people around the world lack access to safe drinking water, and more than 4 billion people experience severe water scarcity for at least one month per year. Although not all regions of the world enjoy regular access to fresh water, this global challenge has prompted positive initiatives aimed at improving the situation. Factors such as pollution, regional conflicts, climate change, and distribution challenges have highlighted the importance of water security.
- In Macedonia, in Skopje alone, approximately 130,000 cubic metres (130 million litres) of wastewater are treated every day. These liquids originate from various sources and wells. When the treatment of this wastewater is carried out properly, it guarantees that water resources remain clean and safe for use. The wastewater treatment process plays a key role in protecting the environment and preventing water pollution. This process not only helps maintain the ecosystem, but also contributes to the responsible use of water. Awareness of the scale of wastewater treatment can encourage people in Macedonia to be committed to the efficient and responsible use of this important resource in everyday life.
- The body of an adult is more than 60% water. Our bodies depend on water so much that we could not live more than three days without it. In fact, water is responsible for lubricating our joints, facilitating the cell cycle, converting food into nutrients, helping to deliver oxygen throughout the body, and much more. That is why it is important to meet your daily water intake: 11.5 cups for women and 15.5 cups for men. Here we must emphasise that the body needs clean, healthy water to drink, so that our organs do not have to additionally filter it after we consume it.
- In Macedonia, the average resident uses around 55,000 litres of water per year. On an individual level, the average resident of Macedonia uses around 150 litres of water per day. This includes the use of water for showering, cooking, washing hands, gardening, and other daily activities. From these figures, we can conclude that water is an important part of our daily life and that it is important to use it efficiently and responsibly.
- Water regulates the temperature of the planet. Although the ocean contains the largest amount of non-drinkable water on Earth, the sea nonetheless works in favour of our planet. Ocean currents help to disperse solar radiation, cool the surrounding lands, and distribute heat more evenly across the surface of the planet. Without them, temperatures would render more of our lands uninhabitable.
- Water can dissolve more substances than any other liquid, including sulfuric acid. Why does this matter? Water can act as a carrier of both beneficial nutrients and harmful chemicals. This is why clean, healthy water is essential for our bodies – not only does it transport vitamins and minerals to our organs, but it also helps transport waste out of our bodies to keep us healthy. Water also allows us to wash away waste, dirt, and other unwanted residues to keep things clean.
